Helen has worked in the NHS since she graduated from Glasgow University. She started off as a microbiology technician, gave that up to complete her masters degree in Women’s Studies and took up a post in east Kent as a sexual health promotion specialist, eventually becoming team leader for public health training and development. During that time she became an active shop steward with Unison, becoming staff side lead for equality within the PCT. Then came a move to NHS Sheffield to lead on E&D in Commissioning followed by experience in North Yorkshire provider services before finally taking up post in NHS Coventry.

Process by which the health needs of the local population are identified. Priorities for investment are set and appropriate services are purchased and evaluated. Primary Care Trusts do not provide all of the healthcare services needed by the local population, they buy-in or commission services from other provider organisations. Typically this includes local hospitals.
