Projects Delivered

The Board has funded and facilitated the delivery of thirteen projects during 2009/10 and these are outlined in the list below:

Assistive Technology Workforce Development Project: NHS Warwickshire Community Health
The project identified the workforce development needs in relation to the use of assistive technology for staff delivering the falls Care Pathway within Warwickshire Community Health and an outline of staff education requirements was provided to inform future education developments.

Coventry Mental Health Employment Project: Coventry & Warwickshire Partnership Trust
The employment project worked with Coventry & Warwickshire Partnership Trust and Local Authority service users to: support them into employment; assist their recovery and social inclusion and develop employment opportunities within the Trust. A total of eighty-six service users engaged with the project and twenty-five have undertaken work placements and /or are now in paid employment.

Developing child public health knowledge and practice in community nursing services: NHS Warwickshire
The project developed and implemented a public health skills development programme for community nurses to empower them to improve health outcomes for children. In total, forty-six community nurses participated in the programme and have increased their ability to:

  • Undertake business planning;
  • Work in partnership with multi- agency teams
  • Implement motivational interviewing techniques
  • Implement the changes to their service to enhance quality

Developing a Community Rehabilitation Service: NHS Coventry
The aim of the project was to develop and implement a common set of assessment tools and methodologies in respect of rehabilitation services across Coventry and Warwickshire.

Project outcomes include:

  • Development and implementation of a ‘Rehabilitation Core Competence Framework’
  • Production of training needs analysis for Coventry & Warwickshire to support the implementation of the competence framework and Care Pathway delivery
  • Commissioned and implemented an education programme in response to the training needs analysis

Delivery of Cognitive Behavioural Skills: Coventry & Warwickshire Partnership Trust
The project developed and delivered a multi-professional ‘Cognitive Behavioural Therapy’ education package for staff within Coventry & Warwickshire health economy. The education package was well received by staff.

First Contact Care: Coventry & Warwickshire Partnership Trust
The project was based upon the premise that people who experience mental health and learning difficulties can experience poor physical outcomes and therefore focused upon the first contact assessment skills of healthcare staff across the Coventry and Warwickshire health economy. An in depth training needs analysis was conducted and education strategies have been identified to develop staff skills.

Leadership & Management: NHS Coventry
The project:

  • Developed a management skills escalator
  • Developed a talent management framework
  • Commissioned and implemented management/leadership development and coaching programmes for staff within Coventry & Warwickshire.

Maternity Matters: George Eliot Hospital
The project commissioned and implemented education strategies to further develop the skills of staff working within the Women’s and Children’s services across all acute Trusts.

Senior Management Development Programme: NHS Coventry
Leadership Master Classes were developed and implemented for staff working across Coventry & Warwickshire. Over 300 individuals participated and were provided with a DVD entitled ’50 Lessons’ to assist them in embedding their learning.

Service Improvement: University Hospitals Coventry & Warwickshire
The project educated staff to undertake service improvement methodologies. Over 165 individuals from across the health economy participated and as a result managers developed a skill set to enable them to become more effective in change management practices and consequently the number of service improvement programmes across the locality increased.

Sexual Health Workforce Development Initiative: NHS Coventry
The development needs of the sexual health workforce were scoped and a multi-professional, interactive, sexual health communications education package was developed. Over 180 individuals from across Coventry & Warwickshire undertook the education and evaluations indicate that it was well received and participants’ skills have been enhanced.

Supporting People at End of Life (EOL) to receive Responsive Care: University Hospitals Coventry & Warwickshire
A variety of strategies were employed to enhance the quality of ‘End of Life’ care provision within Coventry and Warwickshire.

Outcomes include:

  • 150 individuals participated in an ‘End of Life care’ study day
  • 25 individuals participated in multi-professional communication workshops
  • Rapid discharge packages have been developed and implemented
  • Patient information material has been enhanced
  • Cross-organisational working has been strengthened

Trauma Nurse Practitioner: South Warwickshire Hospital Foundation Trust
The project developed and introduced two Trauma-Nurse Practitioner roles to address medical workforce gaps within the Trauma & Orthopaedic service. The roles have proved to be successful and have made a positive impact on patient care. Consequently they are now funded substantively, have been extended to include elective orthopaedics and have increased in number.
