Best Health for Everyone

Our work

NHS Coventry (also known as Coventry Teaching Primary Care Trust) is the NHS organisation responsible for making sure that the 300,000 plus people that live in Coventry have access to the healthcare they need.

Primary Care is the care provided by people you normally see when you first have a health problem. It might be a visit to a doctor, dentist, an optician for an eye test, or just a trip to a pharmacist to buy cough mixture.

NHS Coventry works with local authorities and other agencies that provide health and social care locally to make sure that Coventry's health needs are being met.

Our responsibilities include making sure everyone has access to a GP as well as purchasing acute healthcare services from hospitals on behalf of Coventry patients from the money we are allocated by the government.

NHS Coventry is directly responsible for providing a number of services in the city including GP out-of-hours cover, the Walk-in Centre, speech and language therapy, physiotherapy, foot health, sexual health, dental, psychological services, some learning disability services, occupational therapy, palliative care, intermediate care and child and family health.

It is also the provider of community nursing including health visitors, district nurses and community matrons. The PCT also provides the city’s school nursing service. In Coventry there are around 173 general practitioners in 63 practices, 33 NHS dental practices 34 opticians and 82 pharmacies. The PCT is one of the biggest employers in the city with more than 1,500 members of staff. It is also responsible for improving public health and tackling Health Inequalities through services such as smoking cessation.
