Oral health for children
Looking after the mouth is an essential part of caring for a child's general health. The mouth should be comfortable and pain free at all times.
Every 2 years the oral health of 5 year old children is examined via a dental health survey. In Coventry this is undertaken by the Community Dental Service. The incidence of decayed, missing and filled teeth amongst children in Coventry is increasing and is higher in certain parts of the city. Tooth decay and other oral health diseases are largely preventable. A project is currently underway to improve the oral health of 0-5 yr olds in the NDC (New Deals for Communities) area, piloting from Moat House Children’s Centre.
NHS dental treatment is free for under 18’s

Tooth brushing
Clean the teeth, gums and tongue thoroughly twice every day using a small-headed, soft/medium textured toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. A pea- sized amount of fluoride toothpaste should be used by young children and just a smear for babies. Children 7 years and under should always be supervised and physically helped by an adult when tooth brushing. This will ensure the mouth is cleaned thoroughly and will stop any risk of tooth paste being swallowed.
Diet
Reduce the frequency and consumption of sugars in drinks and food.Limit sugar intake to meal times only.
Plain milk and still water are the only safe drinks between meals. Many medicines contain sugar and can cause tooth decay if given frequently for long periods of time. Check with your doctor or pharmacist to see if sugar-free alternatives are available. If possible give medicines at meal times rather than last thing at night, always check the label.
Visiting the dentist
Everyone should have their mouth checked at least once a year. As an introduction babies can be taken to the dentist as part of the family visit. Check with your own dentist when the best time is to book your child in for their first dental check up.
