Pre Conceptual Care
The term pre conception relates to the time period leading up to a pregnancy and until the point of conception.
Pre conception care includes looking at the individual’s lifestyle, health and fitness, with the ultimate aim of improving the outcomes of pregnancy as well as contributing to the reduction of infant mortality/death rates within the city.
Projects to date include identifying current service provision in the city, understanding the needs of Coventry’s more vulnerable women pre pregnancy, as well as raising awareness of the need for pre conception care.
Advice for pre conception care includes the following:
- Having a healthy balanced diet which includes taking the vitamin supplement: folic acid, and entering pregnancy with a normal body weight.
- Not smoking, having a smoke free environment and not taking recreational drugs.
- Minimising and stopping the intake of alcohol.
- Seeing a healthcare professional as early as possible in pregnancy.
- Seeking advice for any pre existing medical problems.
- Ensuring that you are immunised against Rubella (German Measles)
You can seek further advice for any of the above issues from your GP, Practice Nurse, Pharmacist or health professional.
