Falls Awareness

Stay steady and prevent falls
Falls can be caused by a combination of factors including the environment, vision impairment, amount and effect of medication, physical inactivity, poor nutrition and a history of falls.

As well as the physical consequences, falls are associated with increased anxiety and depression, decreased activity and mobility, reduced social contact, higher medication use and increased dependence on medical and social services and informal carers.

Ten tips for avoiding falls and fractures:

  • Keep active
  • Improve your strength and balance
  • Have regular eye tests
  • Look after your feet
  • Manage your medicines
  • Keep your bones healthy
  • Keep safe at home
  • Have good lighting
  • Keep warm and well
  • Use a step ladder not a chair to reach high places

In the meantime, if you have experienced falls, feel unsteady and are anxious about falling, talk to your GP.
