Immunisations and Vaccinations
Immunisation plays an important part in protecting individuals and the community from serious diseases.
There are two main types of immunisation: active immunisation and passive immunisation
Both types of immunisation prepare our bodies to fight against certain diseases, should we come into contact with them in the future.
Vaccination is the name given to all forms of immunisation. A wide range of vaccines is available to protect against different infectious diseases.
Vaccination is very effective in preventing and reducing the impact of serious illness. Some diseases, such as smallpox, have been completely wiped out, and it is hoped that others such as polio and measles will soon be destroyed. If people are not vaccinated, these diseases could return. They could also be brought back into this country from parts of the world where they are still common. This is why it is important to maintain the rates of vaccination.
